Most of the people have difficulties or problems in how to repair an auto by themselves. Some choose to do the auto repair in repair shop or dealerships, but it is important to know some ideas on how to repair auto by yourself beforehand especially if you’re alone or in mountainous location.

Here are some points to keep in mind about do it yourself auto repair and maintenance:

  • First, you have to assess yourself if you have knowledge in how to repair auto by yourself so that complications of auto part problems will not occur. If you’re not comfortable in doing it just leave it to the professional service repair.
  • Be always prepared in your tools and equipments wherever you go to avoid irrelevant effort and time consuming. This includes special hand tools as well as diagnostic equipment such as code reader or scan tool, multi-meter, test light and vacuum gauges. It is important also to have with you the specific service repair information like auto manuals and wiring diagrams.
  • Doing auto repair by yourself can be difficult, dirty and dangerous work. That’s why you have to assess yourself first and never attempt to do it if you’re tired, tipsy or on under medication to avoid unnecessary injury.
  • Always keep in mind the general precautions in how to repair auto by yourself. Here are some general repair precautions:

-         Wear eye protection to avoid from falling debris like grind and pound metals and chips, splashing acids and exploding batteries.

-         Wear ear protection when grinding, pounding, drilling and etc. it may cause permanent hearing loss and ear damage.

-         Wear mouth and nose protection like OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) approved mask. Not the fiber dusk mask because it contains asbestos that can cause lung disease if inhaled.

-         Avoid smoking and watch out for hot stuffs to avoid from accidents and it is also bad for your health.

-         Have with you a fire extinguisher in case of emergency.

-         Be knowledgeable in calling for emergency help by dialing 911 if an accident arises.

  • Be aware of your physical limits in repair auto by yourself. If you have a bad back, legs or arms just let someone do it for you. Use your common sense.
  • Stay away from distractions like small children, pets and etc. to avoid any complications and accidents.
  • Again as I’ve said earlier, if you feel you are not comfortable in doing auto repair by yourself, just don’t do it. Never tackle jobs that beyond your physical abilities.
